| House of Hindu Rao, Built in c.1820 for William
Fraser (1784-1835), agent to the Governor General in Delhi.
After whose death, it was bought by Hindu Rao, brother of the
Baiza Bai, the wife of Daulat Rao Scindia of Gwalior, who later
moved to Delhi, and befriended, Governor-General of India, Lord
Auckland (1836–February 28, 1842). The house was a site for
major fight furing 1857 uprising, while it was held by the British,
under Major Reid and a force of Gurkhas, who suffered severely
from artillery of rebels. It was later turned to the present
Hindu Rao Hospital. |
